Are you angry about some cars speeding down your street and the inability of police to deal with the speedsters? Maybe you should have a look how teams of police-trained citizens now monitor traffic in South Somerset. In this beautiful district in the South-West of England there are now 35 teams of community speed watchers who carry out several one hour long roadside watches per week. The initiative has achieved a 40% reduction in vehicles exceeding the speed limit since monitoring began in July 2007. Behaviour change is very topical now – this case shows how to put the ‘public’ into public services in a way that cuts costs and improves local quality of life.
