The workshop will present case studies and toolkits demonstrating how service users and other citizens can be helped to play a greater role in the decision making and delivery around public services.

The Big Society in Birmingham: From Total Place to Total Neighbourhood

See how residents have led the renewal of Balsall Heath. This case study looks at how a highly disadvantaged community was mobilized into becoming effective and self-confident. A recent survey shows that it now comes top in responses to the questions:

Do you feel safe in your neighbourhood?
Do you feel proud of your neighbourhood?
Do you feel able to influence evente in your neighbourhood?

This is one of the flagship projects for resident-led neighbourhood renewal in the UK, with major implications for all public services and third sector organisations.

How local people and artists transformed Birmingham’s Coach Station into an award-winning gateway

As part of the redevelopment of Birmingham Coach Station by National Express, EC-Arts worked closely with the local community to produce three permanent public art works which that would both make the coach station a more enjoyable place to visit and also reflect the rich cultural history of the site.

The art installations have been hugely successful and have had praise from public, press and public. The Coach Station is now a proud gateway to the city and is playing its part in redefining the image of Birmingham.
