Co-producing Personalisation Together with Stakeholders in Derbyshire Social Care for Adults

Costs and Savings

Clearly, in the transition phase from traditional service delivery to a more personalised service there will be additional transaction costs. Indeed, the budget to manage the Stakeholder Engagement Group during the transition phase can be considered as one of the sources of increased costs.

However, empirical research has shown that personalised care can not only lead to a better quality of life for the social care users involved but may also reduce costs for the agencies making the transformation. For example, as the recent Demos report on “Getting More for Less” (2009) suggests there is emerging evidence suggesting that personalising services can deliver cashable savings for the public sector of 5–10 per cent, which amounts to £1–2 billion a year across the whole of the sector.

Derbyshire County Council expects similar savings of this order when the programme will be completed early next year.
